Chicago – The Chicago Red Stars have acquired midfielder Kristie Mewis from the Washington Spirit. In exchange for Mewis, the Red Stars have sent a conditional first-round pick in the 2018 NWSL College Draft to Washington. In addition, the Red Stars have waived midfielder Morgan Proffitt.

Mewis, 26, began her NWSL career in Kansas City in 2013 before heading to the Boston Breakers for three years. In her time with Boston, the Boston College alum and MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist earned 10 goals and 5 assists for the Breakers. During the past offseason, Mewis was traded to Washington Spirit and has notched two goals and one assist in 14 appearances.

Internationally, Mewis has 15 caps for the U.S. Women’s National Team, making her first appearance on February 9, 2013. The midfielder worked her way through the U.S. Youth National Teams, including playing every minute during the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

After an outstanding collegiate career at Marquette University, including being named 2016 BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Morgan Proffitt was drafted by Chicago with the 12th overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft. In her rookie season, Proffitt appeared in seven matches for the Red Stars.
