BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – After sweeping four games at the Southern Miss Black & Gold Classic over the weekend, the Jacksonville State softball team swept the Ohio Valley Conference’s weekly awards on Monday.
Sophomore Anna Chisolm was named the adidas OVC Player of the Week and junior Whitney Gillespie earned the adidas OVC Pitcher of the Week honor, the league office announced late Monday morning.
Chisolm, a native of St. Louis, hit .615 (8-for-13) and had at least one hit in every game with multiple hits in all but one game. She also scored at least one run in each game. Gillespie, a Pelham native and the reigning OVC Pitcher of the Year, had another stellar week in the circle. She allowed just one earned run in a complete-game win over Nicholls State. She followed that up with a complete-game shutout of Southern Miss. For the week, she recorded a 0.50 earned run average and walked just four in 14.0 innings of work. She also doubled and drove in a run at the plate.
The Gamecocks pitching staff also had an impressive weekend, posting a 1.50 ERA and holding opposing hitters to just a .208 batting average.
The Gamecocks play their first midweek game of the season on Wednesday, when they travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. CT.
