Diego Valeri sets MLS record for consecutive games with a goal

In the midst of an MVP-caliber season, Portland Timbers playmaker Diego Valeri added weight to his case by etching his name in the MLS history books on Saturday evening.

With his headed goal against Real Salt Lake, Valeri set an MLS record for consecutive games with a goal, finding the back of the net in his eighth consecutive contest. After scoring last weekend at New York City FC to tie the record set three times previously, the Argentine surpassed Wolde Harris (July-August 2000), Raul Diaz Arce (April-July 1997) and Carlos Ruiz (May-June 2006). You can catch all eight goals in his current streak above.

The goal, an uncharacteristic header, came off an out-swinging cross from Dairon Asprilla to Valeri, who found himself free at the far post and nodded the ball down past RSL ‘keeper Nick Rimando. The goal was Valeri’s 18th of the season and moved him into sole possession of second place in the Golden Boot race, just one behind NYCFC’s David Villa.
