WATERLOO, Ont. – Men’s hockey goalie Colin Furlong of Cambridge Ont., and women’s basketball guard Brianna Iannazzo from Thornhill, Ont., have been named the Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 5, 2017.
Furlong led the Golden Hawks to another pair of victories this weekend. On Friday night, the third year Communications major posted his first career OUA shutout making 25 saves to secure a 1-0 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues. During Saturday’s game against the No. 3 Ryerson Rams, Furlong helped Laurier secure their most impressive victory of the season. Totalling 43 saves on the night, Furlong ensured the Hawks came away with a 3-2 victory in double overtime, which sealed home ice advantage for Laurier in the opening round of playoffs. Furlong has now gone four consecutive starts allowing two goal s or fewer to lower his goals against average to 2.54 and raising his save percentage to 0.927, fourth best in the OUA.
This is Furlong’s third time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.
In her first year with the purple and gold, Iannazzo posted her best performance of 2017 in Laurier’s 72-67 loss against the Brock Badgers. Recording 10 points and 1 rebound in 19 minutes off the bench, Saturday marked the first time in eight games that the Health Sciences major reached double digits in scoring. She finished the game shooting 50 percent both from the field, where she was 4-for-8, and from three point range, hitting two of her four attempts. Due to her strong performance this weekend, the rookie is currently fourth in team scoring, averaging 7.4 points per game.
This is Iannazzo’s first time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.
