Game Recap — Register’s Late Goal Sends Eagles to Conference Finals

0

ALLEN, TX. – Eagles defenseman Matt Register wired a slapshot from between the circles into the back of the net with just 1:09 remaining in regulation to give Colorado a 4-3 victory over the Allen Americans on Tuesday. The victory now sends Colorado to face the Toledo Walleye in the Western Conference Finals of the 2017 ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs, after defeating the Americans four games to two.

Colorado wasted little time in grabbing the game’s first goal, as forward Johnny Lazo skated through the left circle and beat Allen goaltender Riley Gill with a wrist shot to give Colorado a 1-0 edge just 1:34 into the contest.

The Americans would quickly find an answer, as just 37 seconds later defenseman Travis Brown would collect a loose puck between the tops of the circles and fire it into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

The Eagles would reclaim the lead when forward Shawn St-Amant stuffed home a rebound in the low slot to put Colorado up 2-1 at the 8:29 mark of the second period.

Just as they had in the first period, Allen would generate a quick response as forward Gary Steffes would send a shot from the left circle through the legs pads of Simpson to knot the game at 2-2 at the 11:46 mark of the middle frame.

The Americans would claim their first lead of the night when forward Bryan Moore raced down the left wing and beat Simpson top-shelf to give Allen the 3-2 advantage with 3:28 remaining in the second period.

The Eagles would start the third period of play with a goal from defenseman Mason Geertsen who would jam a puck in the crease into the cage to tie the game at 3-3 with only 35 seconds gone in the final frame.

Both clubs would exchange opportunities, but neither would break through until Register made a nifty move to sidestep an Allen defender in the high-slot, before burying a slapshot to give Colorado the 4-3 lead with only 1:09 remaining in the contest.

The Americans would pull Gill in favor of the extra attacker, but would come no closer as the Eagles held on for the 4-3 victory. Simpson claimed the victory in net stopping 23 of the 26 shots he faced, while Gill suffered the loss in surrendering four goals on 29 shots. Colorado did not commit a single infraction in the contest, while finishing the night 0-for-2 on the power play.
