Matt Hall leads MCURL to their third straight OUA Championship; Lauren Jamieson helps WBASK land one last regular season win
WATERLOO, Ont. – Men’s curling skip Matt Hall of Kitchener, Ont., and women’s basketball guard Lauren Jamieson from Oakville, Ont., have been named the Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 20, 2017.
In what his first year with the varsity team, Hall led the Golden Hawks to their third consecutive OUA Championship as Laurier posted a perfect 10-0 record this past weekend. The second year financial math major made two game-winning draws in elimination games. First, he drew to the button in the quarter-finals to defeat Carleton 6-5 and again drawing to the button in the gold medal game where he faced three Queen’s stones to earn a 5-3 win. Faced with the challenge of guiding an entirely new team for the Hawks, Hall managed to successfully curl 78 percent for the week and helped outscore the opposition 67-31 overall. Hall played a key role in helping run Laurier’s winning streak at the conference championship to 22 games, and helped the Hawks become just the third school in OUA history to win three consecutive titles.
This is Hall’s first time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.
A third year guard, Jamieson paced the Hawks to a 64-65 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves last Saturday as the purple and gold closed their regular season with one last tally in the win column. Not only did the communications major score eight points off the bench, but six of those were notched in the second half when Laurier out-scored their opponent 38-20 and were able to secure the win. What’s more is, Jamieson finished 2-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-3 from the three point range, in addition to the four rebounds, two assists and two steals that she picked up in 21 minutes.
This is Jamieson’s first time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.
