Saturday’s match is the 12th match of the 2017 MLS season for the Black & Gold and the first of two regular-season meetings between Crew SC and the Impact in 2017. The contest also marks the 15th regular-season meeting between the two clubs dating back to 2012. Currently, the Black & Gold hold a 6-5-3 regular-season record against Montreal. The road contest completes a stretch of three matches in eight days for Crew SC. The clash against Montreal also marks the beginning of a three-match road swing for the club, which then travels to Gillette Stadium to take on the New England Revolution on Sunday, May 21. Following the game against New England, Crew SC travels to BMO Field on Friday, May 26 for the last of three matches against Toronto FC to decide the winner of the Trillium Cup.

On Wednesday, the Black & Gold hosted Toronto FC at MAPFRE Stadium in the second match of this year’s Trillium Cup series. Midfielder Federico Higuain put Crew SC ahead in the 29th minute when he converted a penalty kick against Alex Bono. It was Higuain’s 43rd regular-season goal with the Black & Gold and his fourth goal of the season. The Reds earned a penalty kick in the 38th minute, but goalkeeper Zack Steffen saved Jozy Altidore’s attempt. Toronto’s Tosaint Ricketts scored in the 81st minute and the 90th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 win.

With his goal against Toronto FC on Wednesday, Higuain (42 regular-season goals for Crew SC) moved past Edson Buddle to take sole possession of the fourth spot on Crew SC’s all-time regular-season goal scorers list. Higuain’s goal was also his 16th career regular season penalty kick goal for the club, increasing his margin over Guillermo Barros Schelotto (13) as the Black & Gold’s all-time career leader in the category. Higuain is now 16-for-22 from the penalty spot in the regular-season since joining the club in 2012.

Zack Steffen’s stop of Jozy Altidore’s penalty kick attempt was the first regular-season penalty kick save in the goalkeeper’s MLS career. Additionally, the save was Steffen’s 34th stop of the season, which puts him in third place when it comes to saves amongst all goalkeepers in the League, per Opta.
