DURHAM, N.C. – Senior guard Morgan Jones was named Madness MEAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday by College Sports Madness after averaging 22.5 points in a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference wins for North Carolina Central University.
The Lady Eagles knocked off Coppin State University, 58-46, and South Carolina State University, 52-41, with Jones averaging 22.5 points, four steals, two rebounds and two assists per game in those two triumphs.
Jones started her week pouring in 25 points in NCCU’s road win at CSU last Monday. Jones canned four 3-pointers on her way to matching her career-high point total.
The Stockbridge, Georgia, product followed up that performance with 19 points and six steals at home on Saturday. Jones scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half to rally the Lady Eagles from a halftime deficit to the victory.
For the week, Jones shot a sizzling 93.3-percent (14 of 15) from the free throw line.
The award is the second honor Jones has earned in less than a week. She was named CoSIDA Academic All-District on Thursday.
Jones has started all 22 games this season is averaging 12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.8 assists per contest for her final year. Jones is making an average of nearly two made 3-pointers per game and converting on 82.3% of her free throws.
The four-year letter winner ranks in the top-10 of the league in numerous statistical categories, including free throw percentage (1st), steals per game (6th), points per game (8th) and made 3-pointers per game (8th).
NCCU women’s basketball will be going for its third consecutive win when the Lady Eagles host Florida A&M University on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
