Turks and Caicos Native Earns Inaugural USL Award
SAN ANTONIO, TX – San Antonio FC midfielder Billy Forbes has been named the USL Player of the Month, the league announced today. The honor marks the first of its kind awarded by the USL. Forbes scored six goals and recorded three assists in the first month of the season to help lead SAFC to an unbeaten start and the top of the Western Conference standings through seven matches.
“It means a lot to see my hard work pay off,” said Forbes. “This is the first award of its kind and I’m honored to be named Player of the Month, but it wouldn’t be possible without my teammates and the coaching staff. At the end of the day it is not just me, it’s a team effort.”
Starting with a game-winning goal in the club’s USL opener at RGV FC, Forbes has started the 2017 season on a torrid pace, scoring six goals in San Antonio’s first seven games. SAFC has won every game in which Forbes has scored, and the Turks and Caicos native has helped San Antonio rocket to the top of the USL, leading the league in points (22), goals scored (19) and goal differential (+15), while being tied for first in shutouts (5).
Along with his six goals, Forbes has tallied three assists, which are currently tied for first in the Western Conference and are the second most in the USL. Forbes is the only player in the league with at least six goals and three assists, and is one of two players with at least four goals and three assists along with teammate Cesar Elizondo. Of the three USL players with six goals this season, Forbes leads the pack with a 54 percent conversion rate, scoring six goals in 11 shots while both Romario Williams (Pittsburgh) and Djiby Fall (FC Cincinnati) have recorded a 30 percent conversion rate (six goals, 20 shots).
“The team had a very good first month of the season, remaining undefeated,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “The whole team played well and Billy has been able to work hard, score goals and collect assists as well. The team is really pleased for Billy to get this award, and we are all focused on improving every day.”
With the honor, Forbes becomes the first player – for both SAFC and USL — to earn the Player of the Month award. The Alamo City club has had two Player of the Week award winners in team history (Matt Cardone, Cesar Elizondo), and has had at least one representative in the USL Team of the Week following six of the club’s eight matches so far this season.
The USL Player of the Month award is determined by a three-part system, which includes the USL Technical Committee, the USL National Media Panel and a fan vote that ran on USLSoccer.com and concluded on the night of May 8.
San Antonio FC will host Seattle Sounders 2 at Toyota Field on May 13 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available by visiting SanAntonioFC.com or by calling 210-444-5MLS.
