SB: UC Davis preps for Tuesday’s Causeway clash, weekend’s Bulldog Classic

0

DAVIS, Calif. – By winning its final game at last weekend’s Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, and facing its first ranked opponents of the season, UC Davis will take this momentum, and experience with it to Sacramento State and Fresno State when the team competes in its first Causeway Cup game of the season, and travels to Fresno to compete in this weekend’s Bulldog Classic.

The Causeway rivalry has been an evenly played one in recent seasons; including last season’s split — UC Davis won a halted home game, and the Hornets collected a victory on their own diamond — each team has five victories to its credit out of the last 10 head-to-head games.

Sacramento State leads the all-time series, 24-19-1, but the Aggies have won 12 of 22 rivalry games since joining the Big West Conference before the start of the 2007-08 season. However, they are 2-6 at Shea Stadium as a D-I program, and collected their last road win against the Hornets during the 2013 season.

UC Davis will open the Bulldog Classic against Idaho State, a team that lost its first four games of the season in last weekend’s tournament at UNLV. This is the second time in as many seasons that the Aggies will square off against the Bengals; Idaho State suffered a loss in last season’s Aggie Invitational I.

The last four games of UC Davis’ week will take place against ranked teams, with two matchups versus Minnesota and Fresno State.

Minnesota is off to a program-best 9-0 start after sweeping its pair of games played last week at the BIG/ACC Challenge, topping Notre Dame 4-1 and 3-2 in eight innings, following by its 11-0 and 7-1 results at North Carolina State.

Highlighted by a 9-0 no-hitter over Florida Gulf Coast at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, Fresno State collected a 12-11 win against Cal State Fullerton to finish the weekend with a 2-3 record. Throughout its stay in Mexico, the Bulldogs lost to Mississippi State (4-1), their first game vs. FGCU (9-0) and Texas Tech (9-6).

Throughout its first home games of the season, FSU will welcome Cal Poly, Minnesota, Idaho State and the Aggies to Margie Wright Diamond. Live stats are available for all games played throughout the Bulldog Classic; an internet audio broadcast is available for both of UC Davis’ games against the tournament hosts by clicking here.

Stretching back to Sunday’s matchup at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic vs. No. 6/5 UCLA, UC Davis will face nationally ranked opposition in five of eight games.
