CHAPEL HILL – No. 3 North Carolina swept a doubleheader on Tuesday with victories over Elon and Appalachian State, playing outside at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels (10-1) remain unbeaten in their last 47 home matches.
n the early match against Elon (7-4), the Tar Heels grabbed the doubles point to take an early lead over the Phoenix. Third-ranked Hayley Carter and Jessie Aney earned a 6-0 sweep over Maria Paraja and Alex Koniaev on court one.
On court two, Cassandra Vazquez and Alexa Graham clinched the opening point with a 6-2 victory over Suzanne Zenoni and Kirsten Ward.
In singles, No. 19 Aney was the first to grab a point with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Zenoni.
No. 40 Alexa Graham followed suit with her 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Elon’s Olivia Lucas on court three, putting UNC up 3-0.
Makenna Jones, ranked 70th nationally, secured the match for the Tar Heels, posting a 6-0, 6-4 win against Maria Paraja on court four.
After Carolina had clinched the match, Chloe Ouellet-Pizer added UNC’s fifth point, beating Kirsten Ward 6-4, 6-4. Hayley Carter, ranked No. 3, also posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court one over Erica Braschi.
Junior Cassandra Vazquez completed Carolina’s sweep on court six, winning 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) against Sofia Edo.
The second match saw North Carolina take a 1-0 lead over Appalachian State (4-7). Vazquez and Graham took the first doubles match with a 6-1 win on court two, followed by Jones and Maggie Kane’s 6-2 victory on court three.
Graham opened up singles play with a swift 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Melissa Machado. Aney also earned another singles win 6-1, 6-0 on court two. Carter, playing on court one, beat Heidi Swope 6-3, 6-1 to seal the second victory of the day for Carolina.
Play continued with Vazquez finishing her straight set victory over Megan Mullen 6-2, 6-3 on court five. After dropping the first set 7-5, junior Maggie Kane battled back to take the second set 6-3 over Taylor Bygrave. Bygrave ultimately won 10-4 in a third-set tiebreaker, giving Appalachian State a point and making the final match score 6-1 in favor of the Tar Heels.
Next up for UNC is a visit to South Carolina. The Tar Heels face the 21st-ranked Gamecocks at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
