DENVER – NM State’s Kelsey Horton and Grand Canyon’s Taylor Nowlin have been named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 6-12. This is the second career honor for Horton and the seventh honor for Nowlin.
Horton, a sophomore first baseman from San Clemente, Calif., had an extra base hit and an RBI in each of the Aggies’ three games last weekend, including two doubles and a home run in the series finale against UTSA. She had six hits in 12 at bats for a .500 batting average. Horton tallied three doubles, two home runs and four RBIs over the three games and posted a 1.667 slugging percentage and .727 on-base percentage in leading the Aggies to a 2-1 record.
Nowlin, a senior left-hander from Peoria, Ariz., went 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA and two complete games in four appearances last week. She allowed seven runs on 14 hits over 16.0 innings while striking out 22 and walking just six. In GCU’s season opener against Northern Colorado last Friday, Nowlin allowed just five hits while striking out 11 over seven innings. In a relief appearance on Sunday, she shut out the Bears, throwing two hitless innings.
Other Hitter of the Week nominees included: CSU Bakersfield’s Julea Cavazos hit .421 with four RBIs … Laynee Gomez of Grand Canyon hit .500 with one double and four RBIs as the Lopes went 6-0 … UMKC’s Maegan Rollow hit .500 with two doubles, a triple and six RBIs on the week.
Other Pitcher of the Week nominees included: CSU Bakersfield’s Summer Evans went 1-1 with a 5.37 ERA … Samaria Diaz of NM State went 1-0 with a 0.78 ERA and five strikeouts in 9.0 innings.
