SHERBROOKE, Que. – Size matters, especially in a league as competitive as the RSEQ University Women’s Basketball Conference. Last weekend head coach Craig Norman and Bishop’s Gaiters took two steps in the right direction as they inked a pair of 6-foot recruits for the 2017-18 season. Sara Bazinet and Eve-Marie Houle will don purple and silver beginning this fall.
Bazinet (Otterburn Park, Que.) stands at 6’2 and is from Cegep Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu where her team is currently atop the Division Two standings.
“I really like the small campus at Bishop’s,” said Bazinet. “My coach was speaking with Craig (Norman) and he really respects him.”
Bazinet will study education when she gets to Lennoxville.
“I’m most looking forward to the campus life and playing basketball at the university level. I think my English will get better too.”
Houle (Chateau-Richer, Que.) is from the Cégep de Sainte-Foy program where her and her teammates currently sit in third place in the Division One Standings. She stands at 6’1.
“The way Craig talked to me, he really convinced me that the program is on the rise,” said Houle. “He convinced me that I can make an impact on the team. I like that the campus and community are small. I think I’ll be able to focus on my studies and work at basketball in this setting.
“I’m really excited to play at the next level.” added Houle who will study psychology when she starts at Bishop’s in the fall.
“We know we are lacking some depth at our forward position and have tried to address that through our recruiting,” said Norman. “Eve-Marie comes from a quality program at Sainte-Foy and we feel she’ll be able to contribute in her first year. She’s got great hands and skill to go along with her size and toughness.
“Sara comes from a program that has won two straight division two championships so she knows how to win. Like her brother who is a quarterback in the NCAA she is very athletic. We feel we can help her develop into a quality player at this level.”
