Columbus Crew SC To Host Bundesliga Side Eintracht Frankfurt In An International Friendly At MAPFRE Stadium On July 17


Black & Gold to take on German opponent in international friendly; contest to be Special Match A for all Crew SC Season Ticket Members

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew SC today announced that it will host German First Division side Eintracht Frankfurt in an international friendly at MAPFRE Stadium on Monday, July 17. Kickoff time is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The friendly match against the Bundesliga side is classified as Special Match A for Crew SC Season Ticket Members and is included in their membership.

The Eagles are set to be Crew SC’s 21st all-time international friendly, as well as the fourth German club to visit MAPFRE Stadium, following Hamburger SV (2000), Bayer Leverkusen (2001), and 1. FC Nurnberg (2002). The Black & Gold are currently undefeated against German teams, holding a record of 3-0-0 and outscoring German opponents by an aggregate score of 15-6.

Eintracht Frankfurt was founded in 1899 and has won the DFB-Pokal – Germany’s domestic cup – four times (1974, 1975, 1981, 1988), the Bundesliga once (1959), and the Europa League (1979-80) once. The Eagles currently sit in third place of the Bundesliga table, a position that would qualify them to the UEFA Champions League, as the top three Bundesliga teams are guaranteed entry into the Group Stage of the tournament.

Eintracht is also still in contention of the 2016-17 DFB-Pokal, having most recently qualified for the tournament’s Quarterfinals by defeating Hannover 96 on Wednesday, February 8 by a score of 2-1 during the Round of 16. Eintracht Frankfurt will play Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday, February 28 in the DFB-Pokal Quarterfinals

2017 will be the seventh consecutive summer that an international opponent has visited MAPFRE Stadium. Crew SC is 11-6-3 all-time in international exhibitions, last facing Liga MX club Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz from Mexico in 2016 at MAPFRE Stadium in a clash that the Black & Gold won by a 1-0 score.
