CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina track & field throwers Scott Peretin and Hailey Cook were named the Southern Conference Field Athletes of the Month for April. The honor is the third outdoor field athlete of the month Cook has won during her career and sixth all-time combining indoor and outdoor awards. This marks the first monthly honor of Peretin’s career. Cook was named the indoor field athlete of the month for January earlier this year.
The three outdoor Field Athlete of the Month honors for Cook tie for most all-time in SoCon history with former Catamount thrower Alisha Bradshaw.
Peretin won the shot put at Western Carolina’s Beynon Sports Catamount Classic with a best mark of 15.56m (51-00.75). His throw is a career personal best and currently ranks third in the SoCon. Peretin, a junior, was also the top collegiate finisher in the hammer throw with a best distance of 53.39m (175-02), placing second overall. Additionally, the Chapel Hill, N.C., native took third place in the discus with a best throw of 47.01m (154-04), which is still good for fourth on the SoCon outdoor performance list.
Cook set two No. 1 SoCon marks at the WCU Invitational Presented by Catamount Travel Center in the shot put (15.31m, 50-02.75) and in the hammer throw (52.00m, 170-07). The senior placed second in the shot put and fifth in hammer throw. Cook’s heave in the shot put is also good for 39th on the NCAA East Regional performance list. The Hendersonville, N.C., native also placed second overall in the discus at the Catamount home meet with a best throw of 48.85m (143-10), which is currently good for second in the SoCon.
Peretin, Cook and the rest of the Catamounts will return to Thursday, May 11 as they begin competition at the 2017 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Samford University.
