Soul Continue the Road to Repeat with a win in Baltimore
PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Soul (12-1) defeated the Baltimore Brigade (4-9), with the final score 68-41 in front of 5,237 fans at the Royal Farms Arena on Saturday afternoon.
“This was our best performance all season,” said Soul head coach Clint Dolezel. “Both sides of the ball played lights out and we did what needed to be done to get the win.”
Soul WR Ryan McDaniel led the receivers with five receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns. WR Darius Reynolds added three receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown and FB Mykel Benson tallied 12 rushes for 46 yards and three touchdowns. Baltimore WR Brandon Thompkins recorded seven receptions for 67 yards and one touchdown.
Philadelphia QB Dan Raudabaugh completed 10-of-14 passes for 137 yards and five touchdowns. QB Luke Collis completed 4-of-9 passes for 60 yards and one touchdown. Baltimore QB Shane Carden completed 6-of-18 passes for 65 yards and one touchdown while QB Shane Boyd recorded 13-of-21 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
The Philadelphia Soul won the coin toss and elected to kick off. The Brigade were unable to complete a first down and the Soul offense took over. Raudabaugh handed off to FB Mykel Benson for a 1-yd touchdown and with the made extra point, the Soul took the lead 7-0 to end the first quarter.
The Brigade turned over the ball and the Soul gained possession to kick off the second quarter. Raudabaugh found McDaniel for a 9-yd touchdown, stretching the Soul’s lead 14-0 with 8:25 to play in the first half. For a third time, the Brigade were unable to complete a first down and the Soul took the field once again. Raudabaugh connected with Reynolds for a 26-yd touchdown. Trevino’s kick was good and the Soul kept their lead 21-0. The Brigade scored their first touchdown of the afternoon on a 14-yd pass from Carden to Baltimore WR Brandon Collins. With :35 seconds to go in the first half, the Soul remained in the lead 21-7. McDaniel caught his second touchdown of the night on a 4-yd pass from Raudabaugh and the Soul kept their lead 28-7. Soul LB Joe Goosby forced a fumble on Brigade WR Julian Talley and the ball was recovered by DE Sean Daniels, giving Soul possession with :25 to play in the half. The team capitalized with another 1-yd rush by Benson, stretching the lead 35-7 at the end of the first half.
The Brigade kicked off to start the second half. On the Soul’s drive, Raudabaugh’s pass was intercepted by DB Josh Victorian and the Brigade took over with 13:44 to play in the quarter. The Soul caused another turnover on downs and gained possession once again. Raudabaugh completed a pass to TE Michael Simons for a 9-yd touchdown. Trevino’s kick was good and the Soul remained in the lead, 42-7, with 10:55 left in the quarter. Baltimore QB Shane Boyd’s pass was intercepted by DB Dwayne Hollis for a Soul defensive touchdown. With the made extra point, the Soul’s lead continued 56-7. The Brigade gained their second touchdown of the afternoon on a 23-yd pass from Boyd to Collins and at the end of the third quarter the Soul led 56-14.
To start off the final quarter, Soul QB Luke Collis connected with Benson for an 8-yd touchdown and the Soul’s lead continued 63-14. To try and close the gap, Boyd found Thompkins for a 17-yd touchdown, but the Soul remained in the lead 63-21 with 7:34 remaining. The Soul responded with a 2-yd touchdown run by Benson and with the made PAT, the Soul kept their lead 70-21 with 3:39 to play in the game. Hollis caught his second interception of the afternoon and as the buzzer went off, the Soul defeated the Brigade 70-21.
The Soul will return home to host the Tampa Bay Storm (10-3) on Saturday, August 5th at 7 p.m. The game, presented by PA Lottery will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network and 97.5 The Fanatic.
